Super Curriculum

Our aim for every pupil entering Year 7 at Beverley High School is to inspire a love of learning as pupils embark on their secondary education.

Pupils are offered a wide range of extracurricular activities to enrich their experience of school life, in addition to their normal course of study (e.g. sports, arts and drama clubs). In contrast, the Super Curriculum is our academic enrichment programme, designed to encourage pupils to follow their intellectual curiosity by diving deeper into their academic subjects. It goes beyond what pupils study in the classroom, or complete as part of their independent learning (homework). It's about channelling enthusiasm, sparking exploration and developing key Beverley High School intellectual values: curiosity, critical thinking, open-mindedness, creativity and focus.

Pupils' Super Curriculum journey begins even before they start at Beverley High School, with the Y6 Summer Challenge launched every year on Transition Day. It continues in Year 7 with the Be Curious programme, where pupils use their digital learning log to record their activities and earn Super Curriculum achievement points. This programme includes careers links, so pupils can begin to explore a wide range of jobs in sectors related to their academic interests from the very start of their secondary school journey.

We are currently reviewing and developing our offer for all year groups, alongside running the following Super Curriculum initiatives:

  • Big Ideas - video lecture series delivered as part of the Tutor Time programme (Years 7-11)
  • School magazine (Years 7-11)
  • Poetry By Heart competition (Years 7-11)
  • Inter-House Debating Competition (Years 7-10)
  • KS3 Discover Your Voice workshops (Years 7-11)
  • KS3 Debate Club (Years 7-9)
  • Joint KS4 Debate Club with our partner school, Beverley Grammar (Years 10-11)
  • Year 7 Induction Programme (September-July)
  • Year 7 Reading Challenge (September-July)

Through these initiatives, we aim to nurture the skills needed to help our pupils thrive in the modern world.
