Inspiring a love of learning

“Inspiring a love of learning”

‘The lessons and the teachers are really good and I’ve made so many more friends since starting the sixth form’ Emily, Year 12

‘I’ve been able to achieve a level of independence but still rely on the support of staff I know when I’ve needed it’ Beth, Year 13

‘To begin with I was nervous about meeting new people but everyone has been welcoming. The subjects I chose are right for me and the teachers are helpful. Coming here was the right decision’ A new student who started in Yr 12

“I taught in several schools and I was only blessed with sons but I firmly believe that if I had a daughter I would want her to go to this school because I am aware at first hand of the dedication of all of its staff to the care and education of the girls. This school does realise that it is precious cargo that it carries.” A former teacher

Key Concepts

Each subject will arrange their curriculum by Key Concepts. These are the ‘Big Ideas’ that underpin the entire subject. The concepts run through the entire course from Y7 to 11 (or13) and if a pupil had a good grasp of the concepts and associated skills/facts then they would be considered adept at the subject.

For Example:

Science

Forces

Energy

Interdependence

Particles and chemical reactions

Cells, tissues and organs

Working scientifically

Geography

Place

Space

Scale

Interdependence

Physical & Human Processes

Environmental

Culture & Diversity

Enquiry

Maths

Ratio and Proportional Reasoning

Relations between Quantities and Algebraic Expressions

Spatial and Geometrical Reasoning

Connecting Measurements and Decimals

Functional relations between variables

Reasoning about data

Reasoning about uncertainty

All of the knowledge, skills and concepts in a subject’s curriculum will be grouped under these headings. The Key Concepts may be visited several times in a year to reflect their importance to the subject at that particular stage. The Schemes of Work will state which Key Concepts will be visited during each cycle throughout years 7 to 9 in the long term plan. The Medium term plans will show the expectations of knowledge and skills in each Key Concept. These will be subdivided into Ability Levels (see  Reporting link, for an illustration).
